The first compact home on a trailer was built in the late 90's.  The concept quickly gained attention as it allowed for people to live much more affordably while still having all of their housing needs met. The low overall price of a 200sf tiny home eliminates the burden of a costly 30 year mortgage. Furthermore, they are extremely affordable to maintain as they require less power, heat, and upkeep due to their small size.

Although originally inspired by a more economical way of life, affordability isn't the only reason people are joining the trend. Here is a breakdown of some additional benefits 'tiny living' has to offer:

     ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
Tiny homes, in comparison to the average American home (2600sf), require 93% less lumber to build, 87% less electricity to          power, and emit 97% less CO2. Not to mention many tiny home builders are challenging themselves by using all, or mostly,          recycled material and utilizing alternative energy sources and natural water systems.
     CONVENIENCE
Given that they are attached to a trailer and road-legal, tiny homes can be easily moved if you decide to change locations.            They can also be built entirely self-contained (similar to an RV) for the wanderers whom prefer life on the road. In addition,            what tiny homes lack in size, they make up for in creative design and space-saving features that make for a more                            functional living environment.
     LOW-MAINTENANCE
Tiny homes are, on average, one-tenth the size of traditional homes, therefore requiring one-tenth the time to clean. Their            simplified construction makes for less potential structural issues down the road, increasing longevity and decreasing the              amount of maintenance and repairs.
     SIMPLICITY
Some people are merely drawn to the simple lifestyle that 'tiny living' has to offer. Nothing is quite as peaceful as a small              cottage tucked into the woods, secluded from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Going tiny often requires getting rid of        unnecessary possessions and ridding your life of clutter, a difficult but liberating feat. Simply put, 'tiny living' advocates an             uncomplicated way of life filled with all that we NEED as opposed to WANT.

We spend only 1/4 of our waking hours at home. So the question people have to ask themselves before transitioning to a tiny home is "do we really need a big home? Or can we sacrifice size to save money, leave a smaller footprint on the environment, and live a simpler life with less clutter and stress?" Sometimes the answer is no, and that's okay. Tiny living isn't for everyone and we should choose to live in a home that best fits our desires, family needs, and lifestyle. However, tiny homes have many useful applications aside from full-time dwelling. Many people use them as temporary living quarters while developing their land, getaway cabins, travel campers, guest-houses, and secondary homes.
